The role of AI in coaching readiness

Feb 16, 2025

Did you know that EMCC Global funds individual research projects that address complex challenges?

One such project – that is also looking for coachees to take part – is looking to determine the extent to which AI-supported technology positively influences coaching readiness among individuals.

💡💡Would you like to take part as a coachee? Click here for more details and application form💡💡

The ‘AI-Supported Coaching Readiness Project’ explores how AI can enhance the degree to which an individual is prepared, willing, and able to engage effectively in coaching. It’s said that the more a coachee is ready for coaching, the more optimal the time needed for individual transformation. In turn, this could increase financial accessibility, benefiting individuals and allowing companies to allocate reduced per-employee coaching budgets.

The research will follow the journeys of 80 participants who themselves have had between two and seven years’ of leadership experience.  Organisations can nominate between 5 and 10 leaders who are in the early stages of their leadership journey.

Each participant will have three coaching sessions – with the cohort divided between traditional and digital coaching, all provided by Ozlem’s company Sparkus.

Project manager Dr Fahri Akdemir, assistant professor at RISEBA University of Business, Arts and Technology in Latvia is working in collaboration with project co-ordinator Ozlem Sarioglu – who is also our EMCC Global lead for our AI & Digital Centre for Excellence.

A focus group and surveys will add information to the researchers, who will then assess the experiences of each cohort and prepare a final report and literature review.

Conversations around the use of AI in coaching and mentoring continue to gather momentum. Those identifying benefits cite its potential for scalability, accessibility, personalised learning paths and consistent process management. Those pointing out its challenges refer to a lack of empathy, emotional intelligence and contextual understanding.

The overarching goal of the project is to investigate the use of AI-supported technology in making coaching services more widely available.

Fahri has shared preliminary insights from the literature review:

Transformative Potential of AI in Coaching

  • AI-supported technology is revolutionizing coaching by enhancing coaching readiness, optimizing individual transformation, and improving financial accessibility.
  • AI tools, such as chatbots and data analytics platforms, provide real-time feedback, personalized training programs, and data-driven insights, fostering a more individualized approach to coaching.

Enhancing Coaching Readiness

  • Coaching readiness—an individual’s psychological, emotional, and behavioural preparedness to engage in coaching—can be significantly improved through AI.
  • AI enables personalization, real-time feedback, and assessment of client readiness, ensuring clients are motivated and prepared to benefit from coaching.
  • AI tools effectively support goal attainment, particularly in structured, model-based coaching scenarios.

Financial Accessibility and Scalability

  • AI-supported coaching reduces costs compared to traditional coaching, making it more accessible to individuals and organizations.
  • Scalability is a key advantage, as AI tools can reach a wider audience, democratizing access to coaching.
  • Organizations benefit from reduced per-employee coaching budgets while maintaining or improving outcomes.

Limitations of AI in Coaching

  • AI tools struggle with problem identification, delivering nuanced feedback, and demonstrating empathy and emotional intelligence, which are critical for building trust and addressing complex emotional needs.
  • Technical limitations include challenges in summarizing conversations, observing conversational patterns, and providing personalized feedback.

Ethical and Practical Challenges

  • Ethical concerns, such as data privacy, bias, and over-reliance on technology, must be addressed to ensure responsible AI integration in coaching.
  • Trust in technology and effective communication are critical for the successful adoption of AI in coaching.

Hybrid Approach: Human-AI Collaboration

  • AI is most effective when used to complement human coaches rather than replace them.
  • Combining AI’s data-driven insights and scalability with human coaches’ empathy and emotional intelligence creates a powerful synergy for coaching outcomes.

Future Directions

  • Future research should focus on improving AI’s emotional intelligence, enhancing its ability to understand and respond to emotional cues.
  • Developing ethical frameworks for AI in coaching is essential to address concerns related to data privacy, bias, and over-reliance on technology.
  • Human-AI collaboration will be critical for advancing coaching practices and ensuring positive outcomes for individuals and organizations.

Conclusion

  • AI-supported technology has the potential to transform coaching by enhancing readiness, optimizing transformation, and improving accessibility.
  • However, its integration requires careful implementation to address challenges and ethical considerations, ensuring it meets the unique needs of individuals and organizations.
  • The future of coaching lies in leveraging AI as a complementary tool to human expertise, creating a balanced and effective coaching ecosystem.
